I have based most of my early forms on chess pieces, because I am interested in the hierarchy and value each piece represents.
I like the clean lines, military feel, the way that each piece has its own identity but still remaining part of a group. I have also found myself looking at various types of armour particularly that of the Romans and Samurai and tried to incorporate that look and feel into my work.
All these ideas and influences are manifested in the forms of classical ceramic vessels. I choose to use classical shapes to create the sense of value and preciousness.
Each form is designed to evoke a specific emotion. The queen is feminine in shape tall, proud and majestic. The Rook on the other hand stands on a wide foot giving it a low center of gravity, it has dominant lines like layers of armour and a spire lid reminiscent of a castle or fortress. I am also interested in the idea of displaying my work like it was an army, like a chess board to draw the viewer in for a closer look. Although all my influences date back thousands of years it is my intention to create art that is modern and unique.
